Contemporary spirit work
A modern approach
Modern approaches to summoning Vassago, the third spirit of the Ars Goetia, range from simple personal attunement to structured ceremonial evocation. These methods emphasize a clearly stated purpose, ethical intent, respectful contact, and deliberate closure. Their chants, correspondences, and timing belong largely to modern practice rather than to the original Goetic description.
Simplified personal approach
For direct communication without an elaborate ceremony, draw or print Vassago’s sigil and place it before you. A white or pale-blue candle may be placed nearby. Never set a candle directly on paper or leave it unattended.
- Prepare. Choose a quiet place and decide upon one clear question or intention, preferably concerning something hidden, lost, past, or still unfolding.
- Establish the atmosphere. Light the candle if you are using one. Frankincense or rose incense may be offered, provided smoke can be used safely in the space.
- Focus. Rest your attention on the sigil and breathe slowly until your thoughts settle.
- Chant. Repeat the modern enn, “Keyan vefa jedan tasa Vassago,” three times. Enns come from contemporary demonolatry and are not found in the Ars Goetia.
- Invite and listen. Address Vassago respectfully, state your question once, and remain receptive to impressions, images, words, memories, or changes in feeling. Record the experience without immediately deciding what it means.
- Close. Thank Vassago for his presence and clearly state that the working has ended. Extinguish the candle and return your attention to ordinary surroundings.
Ceremonial evocation
A more structured modern rite combines ideas from ceremonial magic with later correspondences. No single form is universally accepted, but the following pattern is sometimes used for its balance of formality and accessibility.
Suggested preparation: four days of purification, traditionally understood as abstaining from meat, alcohol, and sexual activity. Practitioners may adapt this discipline to their health, commitments, and beliefs.
- Choose the time. Some modern systems recommend Sunday, associated with the Sun, at approximately 2:00 a.m., during a waxing or full moon. These are later correspondences rather than requirements stated in the Ars Goetia.
- Arrange the space. A traditional-style setup may use a protective circle approximately nine feet in diameter and a triangle with sides approximately three feet long. Place the sigil and a black mirror or other scrying tool within the triangle. Scale or symbolize the arrangement when space is limited.
- Prepare the lights and offerings. Face east and light blue and white candles. Modern offerings associated with Vassago include copper coins, sweet wine, rose quartz, and incense blended from rose petals and frankincense. Offerings are optional and should never create a health or safety risk.
- State the boundary. Declare that only communication consistent with your well-being and ethical intent is welcome. Name the purpose of the rite plainly and avoid requests that seek to control another person or violate their privacy.
- Make the call. Recite a formal invitation to Vassago, asking for assistance in revealing a hidden truth, understanding the past, considering a possible future, or locating what has been lost. Gaze into the mirror or scrying surface without straining for a vision.
- Record the response. Write down what arises before interpreting it. Treat impressions as subjective spiritual or imaginal material until they can be considered calmly and, where appropriate, checked against ordinary evidence.
- Dismiss respectfully. Thank Vassago, give clear permission to depart in peace, and declare the rite concluded. Extinguish all flame, dispose of offerings responsibly, and dismantle or erase the ritual boundaries.
Ethical and safety guidelines
Modern practitioners commonly describe Vassago as benevolent but direct, a spirit who values truth more than comfort. This is a practitioner tradition, not a guarantee. Approach the work with a clear mind, avoid contradictory requests, and be prepared to examine unwelcome possibilities without automatically accepting them as facts.
Some accounts warn that Vassago may “take a memory” in exchange for knowledge. This idea is not stated in the Ars Goetia and should not be treated as an expected spiritual price. Memory problems, confusion, or distress deserve ordinary care and should never be romanticized as proof of contact.
Some systems pair Vassago with the Shem angel Sitael to sanctify the rite or support clear understanding. This angelic correspondence is a later esoteric development and may be included or omitted according to the practitioner’s own tradition.
These are contemporary practices, not a reconstruction of the historical Ars Goetia. Use flame, alcohol, and incense safely; avoid smoke where it may affect people or animals. Do not use divination in place of medical, legal, financial, or mental-health guidance. Stop if the exercise becomes frightening or destabilizing and seek appropriate support if distress persists.
