well long nails are really easy to have with no polish although you nails do not need air they do not need to breath.. the nail is dead material just like your hair so if your nails need to breath then you should stop colouring your hair too .. if u have brittle nails then use a good oil like almond or ricebran oil (together is the best) all you are doing is adding moisture to dry dead tissue. file ragged edges regularly(file in one direction, corner to center not back and forth) and push cuticles (no cutting)back to prevent hang nails

nails that tear and rip are a little harder to grow but it can be done. if there are a lot of good products out there that u can use OPI, POSHE, Creative for peeling nails, but if u are dead set against using products u can apply a little bit of alcohol on your nail plate(not the cuticle) and rub it in. this will help to dehydrate the nail plate and firm it up a bit. same for the cuticles and filing( corner to center not sawing) and for softer nails use a finer board to prevent splitting.
