Ooh, nail biting. I was a fellow nail biter since the age of 4, but I quit about a month ago.
How I managed to stop was by using fake nails. I bought a cheap pack of 48 nails, applied and shortened them (so they don't get get caught on things and rip off-- the first time it happens, it HURTS). If you leave the fake ones long, it'll be a big shock because you're used to such short nails (little tasks can be hard at first-- like using a zipper, typing and picking things up). After about a month of using fake nails I removed them by soaking my fingers in warm soapy water and then *gently* peeling them off. They were a satisfactory length and I've finally managed to control my icky habit.
It's hard but after a while you just train yourself, like picky 2 clue said. The fake nails will help you leave your real nails alone, sort of giving them a head start to grow Or you could try a nail biting liquid, which you apply just like polish. This didn't work for me, I still chewed away even though it let a god awful taste in my mouth. I couldn't help it If its because you need something to do with your hands, try using a worry stone. It's a smooth rock with an indent to slide your thumb over and help you relax. (My brother uses it whenever he wants a smoke). Worry stones are small in size and so are easy to carry around in your pocket.
Hope I've helped a little!
