decided to grow out my nails

It has been maybe three weeks since I last cut them (which I know not to do anymore, I will be filing them from now on) and I am surprised by how fast they are growing. How long should I let them get before I start applying a nail hardener weekly? My thumb nail is really wide (like almost twice as wide as my index finger's nail), will I risk breaking it more easily?

I must say, Dark Wyccan, your site has got to be the most thorough and informative site out there (for anyone with nails, not just goths)!
