Icky Cuticles

After doing it for my entire life (I am 26), I fianlly quit biting my nails 2 years ago. They've grown out rather nicely, but they're kind of thin. But that's not my actual problem. My cuticles are constantly all ragged and torn up looking. I don't cut them, and I am careful about how I push them back, but they still look gross. Lotion doesn't seem to help. Any advice would be greatly apprechiated!!!!!
