Yes, cuticles are important – they protect the nail base from bacteria. Technically you should not cut them at all, or at least not too much since that leaves you open to complications. It’s more of an aesthetics vs. practicality issue.

I tend to push them back a bit (no cutting, just a gentle push/lift) on occasion because otherwise, when I polish my nails, I am actually polishing the cuticle at the nail base and thus the polish tends to peel sooner in that area. Also, the coat will look neater if it is not on the cuticle.

I have also heard that pushing the cuticle back also helps the nail grow faster, but I never read anything "official" on that. Anyone know about this??
