Acrylic paints work very well on both artificial and natural nails, and the color options are unlimited. The paints dry fast but are very forgiving if a mistake is made, and remarkable detail can be achieved. I saw a woman with a different portrait of Elvis on each nail, all of them done in acrylic paint by a very talented artist in Las Vegas (of course!), and with rhinestone accents. Not exactly my cup of tea, but worth mentioning because of the ideas her nail art inspired!
I like a deep burgundy or violet frosted polish with a metallic pink or silver tip. I recently did this look with a dark red polish that contained very fine gold glitter, and I used a metallic gold polish in a very fine line on the nail tips. Sally Hansen's Chrome Nail Makeup is the best metallic polish I've seen (besides Hard Candy's "Trailer Trash", IMHO the BEST metallic silver there is), and layering colored glitter polish over this makes interesting effects.
Black and white together look good on nails, too, but for this kind of look I use acrylic paints, as they are more opaque and don't take as long to dry as it would if I used nail polish. Provided you use a good topcoat, acrylics are great!
