False Nail Tips

I have a question and am hoping someone may be able to help me. I have been having my nails done (acrylic tips) for approximately 6 months now. I've heard that you need to take them off after a while to let your natural nail breathe. How long can I leave the nails on before I should remove them? And also, how long is it before I have my nails done again?
