What do you mean by "lines" on the nail, exactly? Are they like little white lines, or ridges that run either across or up and down the nail? White lines are like bruises, and result when there is a trauma to the nail (smashing your finger in a door, biting your nails, or any kind of similar injury can cause white spots). As far as I know, there is nothing you can do about white lines/spots except let them grow out with the nail, which they will eventually. Vertical ridges (called Beau's Lines) are natural to the extent that everybody has them, but some people's are more noticeable than others. You can use a ridge-filler if they really bother you, but don't try to file or buff out deep ones, as too much of the nail plate can be removed, resulting in weak nails. Horizontal ridges can be caused by malnourishment, stress, certain drugs, illness, fungal infections, or harsh treatment of the nail matrix (the area just under the cuticle where the nail is formed). Since the causes of horizontal lines are rather broad, if they are very severe, you may want to consult a doctor to find out why. This type of ridge is also hereditary, so that may also be the cause. Good luck!
