It sounds like your nails may be too dry. Now that it's winter, the cold air outside dries out natural nails, and inside, heaters are even more drying. Plus, every time the nails get wet (from washing your hands, bathing, doing dishes, etc.), they absorb water and expand, and when this is combined with already dry nails, splitting occurs. Try using a moisturizing hand lotion whenever you can, and use a bit of cuticle oil on the nails (such as almond or olive oil). You can also do an intensive treatment at night by applying lots of lotion to your hands and nails and then putting on cotton gloves and sleeping in them. Wearing rubber gloves for housework helps as well, and when filing your nails, use a very fine-grit emery board and file in one direction from the side to the center rather than back and forth (back and forth filing creates tiny cracks that can become major splits). This should correct the problem provided you stick to daily moisturizing. Good luck!
