re-growing nails

i bit my nails for years. then through will power forced myself to stop. i let them grow and they did so perfectly, long and neat. then through manual work one or two broke then a thumb nail. so i decided to cut them back.

now to my problem, they're growing back but some of the nails are splitting along the depth of the nail. not tearing or chipping but forming "plates" of nail segments.

can anyone suggest a solution to this problem. i'm not putting them under serious stress but i cut them back quite far but no more than when i used to bite them
