Breaking Nails

My nails (and hair, for that matter) grow incredibly fast, and very healthy. However, they always break off at the same length. Is there anything I can do to prevent this? Or should I just accept the fact that my nails can only grow so long?
Also, about 5 or 6 years ago, I caught my thumbnail on my gymshorts and tore it off below the quick. OW! Now, it still has a tendancy to break and peel off at the same location. Any ideas on fixing this sucker?
