in pain with acrylic nails

I am hoping someone can tell me if what i am experiencing is normal. I just got acrylic nails put on by a professional today. My nails feel soar!! It is starting to hurt my fingers. Is this normal? It is the first time i ever got a french manicure with acrylic tips!! Can anyone tell me why this is happening to me??
