Lucy: I have bitten my nails "from the crib" per my mom and sisters. I am now 50. I have never stopped biting. I have gotten by with acrylic nails - since 1976!

I don't bite while acrylic nails are on, but if they weaken or lift AT ALL - I pull them off, bite them worse than before acrylics were put on. I have nail salons who refuse to "do me" because my nails are too short.

Right now, I have bitten a couple of my nails up to my actual cuticle! To the cuticle! Hideous. I have never bitten them this badly before! They are literally 1/16th of an inch long.

I feel revulsion and despair and I also don't care. What the hell is going on? You would have to see a photo to believe. I took photos of them with my digital camera.

I am contemplating hypnosis - I actually could lose my job over the severity of my nails - I hide my hands, but soon, someone will speak out of the ugliness or show horror - and I will be crushed. God help me, I am a 50 year old - seemingly "normal" and successful woman - what is this?
