Best nail hardener for guitar player

I'm a 50 y/o guy who's a guitar player. I don't like using plastic guitar picks, preferring the sound of bare finger tips/nails. Because my right index fingernail in particular wears down quite a bit, a couple of years ago, I started going to an esthetician to have an acrylic nail applied to that one finger. It's been working well, but it chips/breaks when I least need it to (when performing) and to be honest, I'm kinda tired of having to go to the esthetician every couple of weeks. I've thought of buying the materials I need (like the 'healthy' products the esthetician uses), including a 'Dremel' type power tool and doing it myself. Not sure what I need thoug. So I'm looking for advice on what to get. Also, instead of going the acrylic nail route at all, does anyone know if Nutra Nail Power Gel work for my purpose -- make my nail hard enough to slow down the wear from playing guitar. I know I may be asking a lot from such a product (Sally Hanson Hard As Nails was useless) and I realize my situation is a bit extreme compared to those of you who don't 'abuse' your nails to the extent I do. Any advice is most welcome and appreciated.
