It's been 10 years now but I do remember I felt the same embarassment when I started to color my nails, and a bit as I began to grow them long. It's normal.

I guess it will also depend on your area. In NYC where I work it's nothing but upstate where I live I am more likely to get the occational stare but even then most people try not to notice. Or better yet the occational cashier will say how great they are and how they wish they could grow theirs but they keep breaking!

But over all, after all these years no one has really bothered me about it, but again this may be harder in the bible belt or in very conservative locations.

Chances are the hard part will be getting past your own insecurities about it.
